Winter Activities in Steamboat Other Than Skiing

Steamboat Springs is considered to be a premier winter destination in the United States. Countless people travel to Steamboat Springs every year to ski and snowboard, but what most don’t realize is the amazing things to do in Steamboat Springs besides skiing and snowboarding. Here is our guide to amazing winter activities.

Strings Music Festival

One of the most interesting non-skiing events in Steamboat Springs is the Strings Music Festival and Programming. Their main event is the Festival, but this amazing organization has events throughout the year. Strings Music Festival has a goal to present music of the highest quality in an intimate mountain setting for all to take in and enjoy. Although they provide events year-round, the summer festival is the most popular and grandiose. This summer festival includes multiple different genres of music in the lineup featuring classical musicians from the nation’s top orchestras and chart topping popular contemporary artists as well. These performances are all put on in the intimate 569 seat pavilion nestled at the base of the Steamboat Mountains. Along with the amazing summer music festival, there are also many free events put on by this amazing organization as well. Outside of the pavilion they serve the community with a variety of free programming and in-school education programs called Strings School Days. These events cultivate music appreciation and ability in Northwest Colorado’s elementary, middle, and high school students. The proceeds for the summer festival and various smaller events go to this amazing cause! We love their winter events since it gives you an amazing and sometimes informative way of learning about great music.

Fish Creek Falls

Clear and fresh high alpine water roars down Fish Creek Canyon, spilling over the magnificent 280-foot-tall Fish Creek Falls, one of the most popular destinations around Steamboat Springs. Just minutes from downtown Steamboat, wilderness comes to life with a splash at the legendary falls, easily accessible for the entire family. A short 1/4-mile walk down a gravel path is a pristine view of the lower falls, while a moderate hike with picturesque views will take the more adventurous to Upper Fish Creek Falls and Long Lake, deep in the Routt National Forest. In the springtime, Fish Creek Falls is at its roaring peak with snowmelt, while in late summer clear water cascades down the smooth rocks. In winter, ice climbers take to the famous face and hikers snowshoe the trail. This frozen picturesque waterfall is a must see during the winter. The cold weather perfectly preserves this waterfall and provides for a truly unique natural experience.

Snow Biking

Mountain biking is a well-loved activity in Steamboat Springs. There are hundreds of various trails that people love to bike across in the spring and summer that provide amazing views of the lush natural beauty of the area. When the snow begins to fall, many of these trails are used for skiing and snowboarding, but if you love to mountain bike, there are still ways to get out there in the winter. Snow biking, also known as fat biking, is taking off throughout the country. Fat biking provides a way for avid riders to get their winter fix in long after the trails are covered in snow. These bikes utilize a larger tire with lower air pressure to provide more surface area contacting the snow, which in turn offers bikers the ability to glide on top of the snow rather than sinking into it. There are many trails in which snow biking is allowed and we recommend trying out the Lake Catamount Touring Center or the trails around the city of Steamboat to get the best experience with snow biking. You can rent these unique styles of bikes at many of the local bike and ski shops, so check out these local shops when you arrive in Steamboat Springs.

Snow Fun Park at Saddleback Ranch

Saddleback Ranch is home to many different amazing winter activities like snow tubing, snowmobiling, and much more. Saddleback Ranch is an 8,000-acre fourth generation working cattle ranch 15 miles west of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Saddleback Ranch is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and is a family owned and operated establishment. In the winter they offer a ton of great activities including photo opportunity horseback rides, snowmobile tours and an amazing snow tubing hill. Saddleback Ranch is a winter wonderland of amazing activities that are truly unique to this amazing piece of Steamboat Springs.
