Fishing in Steamboat Springs

Our favorite activity is actually one that doesn’t require much “activity” and offers a serenity that never fails to calm us, even on its worse days! We are, of course, discussing the merits of fishing, and your Colorado getaway is guaranteed to be enhanced when you spend your days with a pole in one hand and an ice-cold beer in the other. This guide to Steamboat Springs fishing has all the tips and hints needed to make it extra special.

Grab Your Gear

Maybe you didn’t plan on Steamboat fishing during your stay or you just didn’t want to lug your gear across the country, but you’re here now, and the lakes, rivers, creeks, and ponds are calling your name. Answering the call is easy when you stop by Steamboat Flyfisher, located at 35 5th Street. Offering rental gear as well as guides to help you find the places where the fish are always biting, this one-stop shop is open every day of the week from 8 AM until 6 PM most days or until 5 PM on Sundays! They also sell gear and accessories in case you want to add to your fly collection or find a reel that you just HAVE to have.

Where the Fish Are Always Biting

There are plenty of Steamboat fishing guides in the region, including Steamboat Flyfisher, Yampa Valley Anglers, and Bucking Rainbow Outfitters, but what if you just want to find a quiet shore to cast your line without any witnesses or potential chatters? Luckily for you, the rivers, ponds, creeks, and lakes in Steamboat are literally jumping with cutthroat trout, pike, and rainbow trout—just to mention a few! Pick your spot in the Sarvis Creek Wildlife Area, the Christina State Wildlife Area, or at Summit and Jonah Lakes located at Buffalo Pass and get to work tying flies. Don’t forget your net!

Steamboat Springs Fishing Licenses Are Required

As in most states, fishing licenses are required, but it is easy to purchase one, even if you haven’t arrived in Steamboat Springs yet. Simply by visiting www.cpwshop.com/licensing.page. Licenses go on sale on March 1 and cost just $32.95 for a 5-day license or $17.35 for a single day.
