Mount Zirkel

For many adventurers, a highlight of heading to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in the name of fun is the chance to get out and explore the mountainous terrain at its very best. While there’s a lot to see when the mountains are what you’re aiming to conquer, it’s hard to overlook the beauty and appeal of Mount Zirkel. Sitting 12,180 feet high, Mountain Zirkel is impressive, and as such, has an entire wilderness area named after it as well. On the list of prominent peaks in the entire state, Mount Zirkel has earned a spot at number fourteen out of a grouping of more than 1,000!

The Topography of Mount Zirkel

Mt Zirkel is named for a German geologist by the name of Ferdinand Zirkel who dedicated a significant amount of time and research in the area during his lifetime. The appeal of Mount Zirkel often begins with its collection of captivating cliffs that are carved upwards by glaciers over time and lead to broad plain plateaus. The lower region of Mount Zirkel hosts gorgeous lakes and streams as well as lush meadows and an abundance of wildlife.

How to Get Here

Explorers looking to trek their way up Mt Zirkel will want to set their sights on the Slovenia Trailhead, which is one of the most popular routes. Starting in Steamboat Springs, you need to travel two miles Northwest on US 40 to reach Elk River Road at CR 129. You’ll turn right and head 18 miles north to Glen Eden before turning at Seedhouse Road. Follow the signage for about 10 miles which takes you directly to the trailhead where there is plenty of parking. While the easiest route to Mount Zirkel is the Slovenia Trail, there are certainly options for customizing your exploration according to more advanced skill levels. The Slovenia Trail hosts two river crossings which offer up a unique challenge to enjoy and covers just over 17 miles of terrain classified as a 2 in difficulty. Those who choose this route can expect to tackle a 3,800-foot elevation gain along the way. More experienced hikers looking for even more might want to consider heading to Mount Zirkel using the Gilpin Creek Route. While it’s slightly shorter than Slovenia, it’s certainly more challenging following the ridge north to the summit.
