Best Times to Visit Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is a well-known winter sports destination, but with snow on the ground for much of the year, it’s tough to know when the best time to visit is. In order to help you choose when to visit, here is our guide to the best times to visit Steamboat Springs.

Winter Seasonal Getaway in Steamboat Springs

One of the best times to visit Steamboat Springs is from December to March. The weather in Steamboat Springs typically doesn’t get cold enough for snow until late November, so if you are looking for a winter wonderland for your vacation, make sure that you book after December. Steamboat Springs generally has enough snow to start shredding the slopes in late December. Steamboat is one of the rare ski resorts where sneaking in a mid-December trip is a worthy gamble, as crowds will be small and the snow coverage will likely be good, as the ski resort tends to get it slopes open quickly due to the mellowness of the mountain and the high amounts of early cold snow it receives. For Ikon Pass holders, early season trips to Steamboat are a great way to get quality yield out of their pass.

Mud Season

In between Steamboat Resort closing in April and the summer bloom, our mountain town enters a period that the locals call “mud season.” During the mud season, expect jaw-dropping lodging, restaurant and shop deals, fewer crowds, and serene spring weather, making mud season both an affordable and relaxing time of year. With the summer crowd typically rolling in over the Fourth of July weekend, May and June are arguably the most magical months to embrace Steamboat’s trails, lakes, rivers, and parks. Because Steamboat’s elevation (6,700 feet) is at least 1,000 feet lower than many of Colorado’s other popular mountain towns, snow tends to disappear more quickly here and flowers bloom earlier.

Outdoor enthusiasts have lots of options. During the mud season, you can take advantage of the amazing trails that provide picturesque views. We love to go biking through the lush forests and enjoy the natural beauty around town. There are also a host of different other activities to take advantage of. One of the most interesting is a zipline adventure. You can soar through the air and see all of Steamboat Springs for an adrenaline rush that is too amazing to pass up.
