A Summer Journey to Steamboat Springs

While it’s primarily known as a ski destination, you might be surprised at how many great activities there are to do in summer in Steamboat. This gorgeous mountain town is chock-full of places to play and explore, so lace up your hiking boots and get going!

Climb a Mountain or Two

No matter your fitness level, there’s simply no excuse for not taking at least one hike while in Steamboat Springs. You’ll find a trail to love here, even if you’re not a hardcore mountain climber. Start with an easy walk along the Yampa River on the Yampa River Core Trail, a beautiful path that winds through the center of town. It’s also a nice spot for a mellow bike ride! Gentle walkers will also enjoy a stroll around the Yampa River Botanic Park.

Beginner-level hikers will appreciate the walkout to Fish Creek Falls, which has both easy and moderate trail options. For a bit more of a challenge, head up to Emerald Mountain on the far side of the Yampa River; trails with more elevation provide an incredible view of the town, as well as a great workout!

Avid hikers have tons to explore in the Steamboat area. Don’t miss the numerous trails at Steamboat Ski Resort, which all become walkable after the snow has melted. Another fun thing to do is a day trip out to Mount Zirkel Wilderness area, where a five-to-six-hour round-trip journey will take you to Lake Gilpin, a beautiful spot for a picnic lunch. And remember, no matter where you choose to hike, in early summer you’re likely to see one of Colorado’s most colorful displays, wildflowers!

Fishing, Rodeo, and Fun Steamboat Springs Summer

In Steamboat Springs, you are truly visiting a piece of the Old West. Why not immerse yourself in some truly Western activities to try? If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at fly fishing, Yampa River Outfitters will hook you up. Their private tours and instruction for all levels of fishermen will take you to some of the best spots around, on both public and private water, as well as provide you with all needed equipment. Be sure to purchase your fishing license, though!

Another classic Western pastime is watching cowboys do their stuff at the rodeo. Steamboat offers pro rodeo demonstrations every Friday and Saturday night throughout the Steamboat Springs summer months, as well as an extra-special event for the 4th of July.

Finally, for a bit more about the pioneer heritage of Steamboat Springs, stop by the Tread of Pioneers Museum to learn about the town’s founding and history. With informative displays about the development of the ranching, mining, and ski industries, as well as the natural history of the area, it’s well worth a visit.
