Steamboat Springs is a fun and fascinating vacation destination for travelers to enjoy year-round, but there’s something exceptionally exciting about heading this way when ski season is in full swing! Whether you’re new to skiing or an experienced pro on the slopes, there are trails here that you won’t want to miss out on. Heading over to Steamboat Ski Resort is an opportunity to explore no less than 165 named trails designed across nearly 3,000 acres of inbound terrain. There’s truly something for everyone here but if you have to whittle it down to the top 5 Steamboat Springs ski trails to check out, the following should definitely be on your must-experience list.

Swinger

If you’re a beginner heading to Steamboat Springs to hit the slopes, or you’re spending time this winter here with little ones in tow, be sure to start out on Swinger. This green trail is found below Rough Rider Basin and leads directly to the resort’s base area. It’s a meticulously maintained slope ideal for practicing new skills and hosts a wide run as well. The smooth surface will keep new skiers comfortable for the duration of their run and there’s just enough of a curve to be teachable when it comes to learning turns. Generally, Swinger remains relatively free of crowds as well which can be a nice confidence builder for those who are new on skis.

Tomahawk

A step up from Swinger in terms of difficulty, Tomahawk is listed as a blue trail, but many visitors find that it’s also an appropriate option for those who typically stick to green routes. Kids and adults alike will find the wide run of Tomahawk appealing and the consistent undulations along the slope make the run even more interesting for learners. Those same purposeful undulations make this route popular among snowboarders too. The combination of fun rollers and easy pitch are further enhanced thanks to the trail’s sun-facing location which keeps a lot of ice away when temperatures drop. Another benefit of hitting this ski trail is the amazing views for which it is known. All the way around, it’s worth your while to check out.

Moonlight

Intermediate skiers excited to be spending time on the slopes at Steamboat Ski Resort won’t want to miss out on an opportunity to put their skills to the test on Moonlight. This route runs from Rainbow Run back to Elkhead and the Sundown lifts. It’s an inviting North side to south side trail through the resort that enjoys a convenient central location. It’s known for its soft snow and consistent slope as well as a naturally formed sidewall on the right. The top portion is noticeably steeper than the rest, but it remains wide making it a good option for skiers of all ages.

Longhorn

One of the intermediate-level Steamboat ski trails to take time to explore this winter in Steamboat Springs is Longhorn! You can easily reach this ski trail using the Pony Express lift. No matter what the weather may be doing or what the day’s conditions entail, this is a blue/black rated trail that delivers up the fun and challenges you’ve been looking for. On days the trail is groomed, you might find more traffic on the run, yet still find an amazing opportunity to take advantage of deep curves and turns along the way. Power days see the trail level out and skiers can take time to enjoy the run at their own preferred pace.

White Out

The most experienced skiers heading to Steamboat Springs during the height of ski season will find their place on White Out. This ski trail enjoys the distinction of being shaded all day, so the snow here is undeniably soft even for many days after a storm rolls through the area. It’s easy to reach the top by way of the Burgess Creek and Elkhead Express lifts, but the ride down is anything but tranquil. Skiers will find thrilling moguls waiting for them that offer exhilarating jumps, twists, and turns to face. The difficulty level means you’ll likely find the trail is yours to take on alone or with just a few others at a time.
